American singer Chris Brown has been ordered to pay $12.9 million in damages after a jury found him negligent over a dog attack that left his former housekeeper with serious injuries.
Avila had accused Brown of failing to properly restrain the dog, allowing it to move freely around the property and leading to the attack.
She told the court that she suffered severe injuries, including permanent scars on her face and left arm, as well as emotional trauma and limited movement following the incident.
Brown denied being responsible for the attack, claiming that Avila provoked the dog and contributed to what happened. He also described Hades as a guard dog and said housekeepers had been warned about the animal.
However, Avila and her sister disputed the claim, saying they were never warned about the dog.
During the trial, Brown testified that he found Avila injured and covered in blood after hearing the dog growling. He admitted he did not personally call emergency services because he feared the incident would become public, but a member of his team contacted 911.
The jury also awarded additional damages to Avila’s family, with her sister Patricia receiving $885,000 for emotional distress and her husband, Oscar Olivo, receiving $50,000.
After the verdict, Avila’s family attorney, Michael C. Murphy Jr., said they were pleased with the outcome after years of legal proceedings.
“We are so happy for her and her family after everything they went through on that horrible day,” he said.
